TT Podium Hoosier small.jpgComing off a great racing season that started with a 3-hour race at Road Atlanta in March, Voodie Racing's (and VHT's own) Patrick Smith has won the Time Trials National Championship sanctioned by the National Auto Sport Association.

The Time Trials format is similar to NASCAR qualifying where each driver has a short opportunity to set the fastest lap. In a competition normally decided by hundreths of a second, Patrick set the fast lap at a blistering pace of 1 minute 42.217 seconds - over a second and a half faster than the second place finisher!

With six 1st place finishes and two 2nd place finishes, Voodie Racing has won the 2008 Great Lakes Regional Championship in Performance Touring! Performance Touring is wheel-to-wheel racing with highly modified production cars, classed to provide close racing and fierce competition. This is a great accomplishment for Patrick Smith and the racing team considering this is their rookie racing year! The victories this year came at race tracks in Ohio (the world-famous Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course), Indianapolis and Michigan. Much thanks to the team supporters and sponsors for helping make this happen!

Just found this picture... can anyone guess what I'm holding? Laughing

Luckily the previous owner had planned for a good "off" and there were rubber mounts holding the intercooler. They sheared off. It's a lot cheaper to replace those than an intercooler!

Scrambling to come back from a crash at 90mph during qualifying, Patrick Smith and the Voodie Racing team were able to repair the car in time for the 2008 Performance Touring championship race. The cause of the qualifying crash was a brake line failure at the worst possible place on the track - the end of the longest straightaway. Since the crash occurred during a qualifying event, the #14 Mazda Miata had to start from the back of the pack for the championship race.

Well, the first regional race of the year is over. Mid-Ohio in April is never the same and this year it was no exception! On arrival Thursday evening the weather was nice and warm - for April - at a balmy 65 degrees. This quickly changed to rain with snow showers forecast for Sunday. It would be an interesting weekend for sure.
